Relationship Summary:

Systematic Computer Science has given resources to King Faisal Specialist Hospital to aid in process improvement, application development, and advanced technical trouble-shooting.

In 1970, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia laid the cornerstone for what would over time become one of the largest and most prestigious hospitals in the Middle East. The King Faisal Specialist Hospital is a primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare institution, and it holds approximately 890 beds. It is also the national referral center for oncology, organ transplantations, cardiac surgery, and genetic diseases. World-renowned physicians have worked at KFSH, both Saudi and non-Saudi.

The Research Center is a complementary organization to the hospital. Its departments focus on areas which are clearly related to medicine:

  • genetics
  • cyclotron and radiopharmaceuticals
  • biostatistics, epidemiology, and scientific computing
  • biomedical physics
  • biomolecular research
  • comparative medicine

The research staff are hired from all around the globe, and are active participants in the academic medical world.

Both the main hospital and the research center have information technology departments - and Systematic Computer Science has had the privilege to work with both.

In the main hospital, the Information Technology Affairs (ITA) administration has several different groups including system developers, networking engineers, integration specialists, database analysts, and data warehouse specialists. Cutting edge technologies are used to support the massive infrastructure of the hospital, including Cerner's healthcare information technology computing platform, IBM WebSphere's application and portal servers, and EMC's Documentum enterprise document management system. Systematic Computer Science has worked with the systems development and portal administration groups primarily, in the role of process improvement evangelist, senior developer, and all-purpose technical troubleshooter.

The research center's information technology staff are more specialized due to the academic nature of their work. One major responsibility they have is to provide database-backed registries - sometimes at the national level - to gather and analyze medical information from the Saudi population as a whole. Technologies within the research center include Microsoft SQL server, ASP.net and a wide variety of specialized packages to support scientific computing. The role of Systematic Computer Science for the research center was to design and implement the National Biorepository, a tissue bank for storing and disseminating various types of medical samples.
