Challenge: 

To develop the software for an embedded microcontroller in a flow monitoring and control device. The software must be extremely efficient in its use of memory given the scarcity of onboard RAM. There must also be great attention paid to ensuring that reading sensor inputs or writing to controller outputs do not freeze the system in one way or another. The software must work around hardware and packaging limitations.

Solution: 

Systematic Computer Science built and tested a fully functional application for managing the sensors and outputs of the flow monitor and controller. The application was developed using a combination of cross-compiled C and assembly, the latter being reserved for operations that were especially performance sensitive.

A few of the features:

  • real-time measurement of the pH level of the monitored flow
  • direct management of some of the microcontroller's registers for optimal memory management
  • a watchdog timer to reset the system in case of freezes
  • very tight code and efficient footprint to fit in the system's limited resources

Benefits: 
The client received a high-performance application that met their requirements and more for their flow controller. The software was one of the last steps towards creating a viable flow controller product to add to the client's venerable product line.
